One of the most common scams in Bangkok and other major cities. A taxi driver will either refuse to turn on the meter and insist on a flat fare (typically 3-5x the metered price), claim the meter is broken, or agree to use it but take an unnecessarily long route through congested areas. At airports and tourist hotspots, drivers often cluster together and collectively refuse metered fares. The legal requirement is that all metered taxis must use their meter within city limits. A normal ride from Suvarnabhumi Airport to central Bangkok costs 250-400 THB by meter plus tolls, but scam drivers may demand 800-1,500 THB.
