At budget guesthouses, small shops, and some massage parlors, older or modified POS terminals can be used to skim your credit or debit card data. The skimmed data is used to create clone cards or for online purchases. Some staff have been found using portable skimmers hidden under the counter. The risk is higher at businesses without modern contactless terminals. ATM skimmers (devices placed over the card slot) have also been reported at standalone ATMs in tourist areas, particularly those not attached to bank branches. While less common than in previous years due to chip-and-PIN technology, skimming still occurs.
