At popular temples (Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai, Wat Pho in Bangkok, temples in Ayutthaya), people positioned near entrances — wearing clothes that suggest they work at the temple — approach tourists and insist they must buy a specific offering set (incense, candles, lotus flowers, gold leaf) for 200-500 THB before entering. In reality, offerings are optional and much cheaper inside. Others guide you to a 'donation box' that is actually their personal collection. At some temples, someone will tie a bracelet on your wrist uninvited and then demand 'a donation' of 500+ THB. Genuine temple staff do not approach tourists to sell offerings.
