Ride-hailing driver "go off app" scam

After accepting your ride on Grab or Bolt, the driver contacts you and asks to cancel the booking and ride 'off app' for a lower price. This removes the app's price guarantee, GPS tracking, insurance coverage, and complaint mechanism. Once off-app, the driver can charge whatever they want at the destination, take a long route, or in rare cases, there is a safety risk. Some drivers do this to avoid platform commissions, but for the passenger it removes every protection. This scam increased significantly in 2025-2026 across Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya.
