Near popular sites like Ayutthaya's historical park, waterfalls in Chiang Mai, and viewpoints in Krabi, unofficial 'ticket offices' set up small desks or booths that look semi-official. They sell entry tickets at inflated prices, or sell tickets for sites that are actually free to enter. Some even sell 'mandatory guide' services that are not required. The official ticket booth is usually further ahead, at the actual entrance. These unofficial booths rely on tourists who assume the first booth they see is the right one. Some also bundle unnecessary 'transport' to the entrance (a 50-meter walk) for an additional fee.
